Why big canary
In the 1800s and early 1900s, coal miners often brought caged canaries with them below the earth, as these birds had the ability to detect noxious gases before humans could notice. A change in the canary's behavior would signal a warning to the team of miners to evacuate as quickly as possible because of deteriorating air quality, saving their lives. On a more personal note, my father worked in a small town's coal mine in the 1950s, so the canary holds a special reminder of humble roots and what working hard can do to make a better life.
